Local Food Camp Out Recap

The Local Food Camp Out last Saturday was a great success!  With just over 140 attendees, a community linked by a love for local food and local farming convened on the pastures of Nature's Harmony Farm under surprisingly clear skies.  It was a great sight to see so many tents scattered across the pastures among the eggmobiles, chicken tractors, bees, turkeys, cows and sheep.  Of course, If anyone pondered becoming a farmer prior to camping out, I'm pretty sure our roosters erased those secret desires once they began their farm wide call and response at 4:30 a.m.

The dinner was exquisitely prepared by chef Hugh Acheson and his team. BTW, in addition to Five and Ten and The National, Hugh is opening his first restaurant in Atlanta next Spring. It is called Empire State South.

The menu featured:

Passed hors d'oeuvres

  • Pimento cheese sandwiches with pickled okra
  • Deviled egg with caviar
  • Chilled sweet potato soup with chive cream

On the table

  • Roasted beets with avocado, Split Creek feta, and arugula
  • Tians of eggplant, sweet peppers, and basil and Split Creek goat cheese
  • Savory swiss chard tart
  • Red Mule polenta with melted leeks
  • Grilled Nature's Harmony Farm Ossabaw pork chops with agrodolce
  • Roasted Nature's Harmony Kathadin lamb leg with salsa verde
  • Nature's Harmony Poulet Rouge chicken bog over rice
  • Pumpkin and pecan pie

The food was accompanied by great local beer from Terrapin Beer, local wine from Boutier Winery, farmstead cheese from Split Creek Dairy and local beverages from Righteous Juice.  The North Georgia Bluegrass band provided the entertainment during dinner, which was followed by a blazing bonfire. On Sunday morning we were greeted with fantastic fresh, hot and locally roasted coffee from 1000 Faces Coffee.

All of us at Nature's Harmony Farm are very grateful to the local food providers who made this event possible, and, of course, to the fantastic local food enthusiasts who showed up to support the event.  Many people asked if this would be an annual event...we'll see about that.  We barely had time to rest on Sunday afternoon before a flood hit yesterday (and another projected for tomorrow). More on that later, but for now, let's celebrate the good times, and this past weekend was certainly that.

Enjoy the video recap of the Georgia Local Food Camp Out.

Hi! I just wanted to thank everyone that made this such a special event. My mother, daughter and I had a blast. The food was awsome and people were even better. I hope that there will be another one next year! Faith

What an incredible event! We loved your farm and admire your farming philosophy.
We learned so much from the Farm Tour. Thank you, Tim and Liz, for opening your lives to us so that we may open our eyes.
Thank you too for all your hard work to put together an event of that grand scale. What an awesome evening!
(Hey, if you do it again, maybe we'd not chicken out on the camping thing!)
