Ossabaw Island Pig: The Ultimate Pork for Consumers, the Ultimate Breed for Sustainable Farmsteaders
Ever since they were left by Spaniards on Ossabaw Island several hundred years ago, the Ossabaw Island hog has been left to fend for itself on whatever vegetation, grub and nourishment it could harvest, in good times or bad. What better breed of pig is there for sustainable farms and homesteads than these fabulous foragers? We think none!
Ossabaws not only survived when they were stranded on the island, they thrived and built large populations. This means that they are not only very fertile but also outstanding mothers. Indeed we have found this to be the case as they make their own nest in the pastures and woods, nurse their young and virtually never...ever...lose a piglet.

So what's the downside? They are slightly smaller framed than larger breeds such as Berkshire and grow somewhat slower, but these shortcomings are more than made up for by three factors:
- They require substantially less off-farm feed inputs;
- Their small feet means they'll make a tiny impact on the land compared to the larged hoof breeds; and,
- The fact that they are excellent breeders and mothers means that virtually all piglets will make it to market weight.
- Finally, chefs and foodies LOVE Ossabaw pork for the wonderfully flavorful meat it provides. Indeed, The Cooking Channel even came to our farm to film an episode with one of our Ossabaws being the guest of honor at dinner! So if you're looking for the perfect pig to breed or to finish off for your family, look no further than the Ossabaw!
